Google News is an automatically generated news site that collects headlines from more than 400 news sources around the world: similar articles are grouped and then displayed in accordance with each reader’s personal interests.

The goal of the project is to offer readers more individual options and a wider choice. The Google News website offers links to several articles on each event, so users have the opportunity to choose their own topic of interest and news source.

Articles are selected exclusively by computers, which also determine their rating based on the frequency with which sites on which the news appears on the Internet, while taking into account other factors.

Claimed functions

Personal news with the ability to customize articles of interest;
News for your mobile from the Google News WAP site;
Updates for various sections of Google News and search results for news by subscription on the RSS or Atom channel.

I do not think that this idea is the newest, but it seems that Google was the first to make such functionality public and free.
