WD TV Review

Immediately I’ll draw your attention to the fact that WD TV is average between WD TV Mini (quite simple, with a minimum set of codecs) and WD TV Live (everything that I have + Ethernet). In appearance and in profile, the last two are indistinguishable in general.



I already have a four-month experience of operating the Iconbit HDS5L media player and the second media player was intentionally bought by a weaker one, since was intended for the child.

I don’t want to consider in detail such things as size, weight, codec set and chip installed inside. This has already been written in the news and, moreover, the other properties are more important for the consumer, which can be forgotten to be mentioned in the advertising booklet or in the specifications block on the product site. Therefore, I am only about feelings when using.

What can be attributed to the positive characteristics of the product:

1. The size. He is really quite small.
   
   
2. Price. Slightly less than 4000 rubles in M-Video and in the Russian Internet. On the WD website, it costs $ 129, which, with the shipment here, will give exactly the same price.
   
   
3. A large number of supported codecs. So far there has not been a single film that he could not lose.
   
   
4. Understandable six-year child interface.

There are also disadvantages, especially in comparison with Iconbit:

1. Inability to memorize the place in which I stopped watching a movie (after turning off the player). In Iconbit, this is a very handy feature. Just turn it off, and the next day you turn it on in the same movie and wait for OK on the question "Continue watching?". Well, or from the beginning you start to look. There is no such thing here, so you have to rewind.
   
   
2. The potentially beautiful feature of showing tambneils of downloaded movies doesn't actually work. Or I can not understand what needs to be done to make it work. Movie icons instead of tambneil. Moreover, the signature is visible only in the current one. Awful
   
   
   
   It may be necessary to record movies with the help of a special converter program, but I did not manage to test it, because Convert specifically 60 GB of cartoons I do not want.
   
   
3. In the off state, the USB is still active. I have a hard drive connected to the player. And it does not matter what state the player is in, the disk is constantly spinning. And heated. And turns on the clock to failure. Why is this done, I do not understand. I also do not want to unplug the disc, pulling the connector out of the player.
   
   
4. No composite output for video. I did not want to buy an HDMI-lace for the player, so I have to send the picture to the TV through the usual “tulip”:
   
   
   
   
5. Tiny remote. I do not agree with the fact that if the equipment is small, then the console is small. Remote - for the hands, not for technology. Therefore, I would prefer to have a console of normal size and normal shape.
   
   
6. Glossy case, to which dust sticks. This is not really frustrating for me, of course, but it is precisely for this reason that I did not place my own photo of the patient at the beginning of the material, so as not to embarrass with abundantly adhered dust, which I didn’t manage to erase from 4 attempts. Summary.

As a second media player, for an undemanding user, for users without complaints, this piece of hardware is well worth its money. But those who want to be pleased with the acquisition, it is worth looking in the direction of a more expensive option.

The final assessment: "if this is the only player in the house, then it is not worth it"
