Chocolate EeePC

With the release of Intel's new Atom processors, netbooks can be said to have a second wind - with the same price, there are a few more options. For manufacturers, this is an excellent reason to release a new line of devices, making work on the mistakes of previous models.

image

I have already talked about one such device - it was the EeePC 1005P netbook. Today - two new netbook EeePC 1008P KR , which definitely deserve attention.

image The full name of the model is ASUS Eee PC 1008P Seashell Karim Rashid Collection . It's hard to remember right away , nevertheless, in the ASUS office, after the words “ Giv mi pliz tu units of and-and-and-writing sishel karim rashid collection ” I understood. Something like this two netbooks were on my table - one patska-coffee, the second feminine pink.

In other colors, the novelty will not be released. And yet - due to the fact that the model is not much different from the usual EeePC 1008, there will be more photos in the post than the text.

image

image Who is Karim Rashid? Well, apparently, the designer ... judging by Wikipedia is also well-known. The fact that in front of me is the case of his hands, shows the inscription on the box, as well as an autograph on the inside of the case. Well, what did he suggest that, what could not the designers of the company?

image

image Appearance

The first thing that involuntarily catches the eye is the new surface relief of the netbook. I do not even know how to describe it - it seems like just cells ... but at the same time they are at different levels, at small angles to each other. Accordingly, the surface (cover and back side) is not smooth. Well, perhaps the most pleasant thing in the new appearance is that the whole body is completely matte, it is absolutely not easily soiled! Tadam!

image

image

The same is on the reverse side - a relief surface in which various functional elements were successfully disguised: the “gills” of the speakers, a removable adapter for an external monitor (miniDisplayPort -> D-Sub), a removable battery (it is flat and hides inside the case), a cover .

image

image

On the sides, too, everything is hidden - all connectors (except power supply) are located behind folding plugs. The case is very thin (much thinner than many other netbooks) and lightweight - more than a camping option.

image

More specifically, the dimensions of the netbook are 262x180x26 (mm) with a weight of 1145 grams.

image

image

image

Finally, the matte materials reached the inside of the “book” - all the space around the touchpad is made of matte plastic.

image

Only the screen remained glossy, but this is already the lesser of troubles - there is no protruding frame around it, which means that it will be possible to erase fingerprints at least with a sleeve. By the way, making an imprint on the screen is much more difficult than under the keyboard. Well, the solid button of the multitouch touchpad remains chrome-plated - this stylish design element can be found in almost all ASUS notebook models. The touch panel itself is part of the panel under the keyboard, does not protrude and is not sunk, has a pleasant texture from the “dots”.

image The screen diagonal is 10.1 inches, and the resolution remains the same - 1024x600. Just above the screen is a 1.3-megapixel "eye" of the webcam ...

image

... and under it, on the hinge - 4 status LEDs. Well, two buttons - power (right) and turn off the touchpad (left).

image

The keyboard itself consists of divided keys with a standard layout.

image

image

As an operating system, the netbook uses the initial version of Windows 7, which runs on the device more than smartly. There were no non-standard programs in the standard system.

image Performance

image The nominal clock frequency of the new Intel Atom N450 processor is 1.66 GHz, but if necessary, it is easily accelerated to 1.83 GHz as part of the heat pack. The performance index in Windows 7 is 1.9 (out of 7.9; everything depends on the processor), although on the Internet on the same netbook a rating of 2.5 is shown. Perhaps it was necessary to update the drivers for the chipset, but even with what was, it worked perfectly.

image

image

The fact that there is at least 1 cooler inside is clear in the load - a hiss is very characteristic from somewhere inside. But it is fairly quiet and does not interfere with work; for the rest (in idle time) netbook is not audible at all, including the work of the disk.

With the SuperPi 1M test, the netbook copes in 81 seconds, which is faster than its predecessors:

image

With another CPU Free Benchmark 2.2 arithmetic CPU test, the netbook shows 69.11 seconds, which again shows the advantage of the new Intel Atom.

image

In the synthetic tests 3DMark05 and 3DMark06, the netbook scores 300 and 155 marks, respectively, which once again confirms the unsuitability of netbooks for serious three-dimensional games and programs.

image

image A 250 GB hard drive, another 500 GB will be available in the ASUS WebStorage online storage.

image

What was surprising - in the pink “female” model, the entire gigabyte of RAM was installed, while the guys had two at once. And yes, the pink netbook has a glossy case on the outside (matte inside), but it is also not easily soiled.

image As for the operating time, it is at a good level and longer than the regular EeePC 1008. The fact is that the TDP of the new Pine Trail platform (Intel Atom N450 processor on the NM10 chipset) is only 7.5 W, while the Intel Atom N280 is on the 945GSE chipset, this figure is about 12 watts. On a standard 3-cell battery (2900 mAh, 10.95 V, 31 Wh) without communication modules and with minimal backlight, the device works for about 7 hours. In the same conditions, but with Wi-Fi - about 5.5, and at maximum load and with maximum illumination - about 4 hours.

image

Given that there are two 3-cell batteries in the package, the resulting battery life can be easily doubled :)

image Total

Judging by the fact that this is not the first device in a matte case, ASUS has heard our prayers;) And this, damn it, can not but rejoice! Yes, yes, finally hopes for a matte non-mark body are starting to come true. And that, perhaps, it was such a tricky move from manufacturers - first to sell a lot of “lacquered pianos”, and now start producing what they really wanted. In any case, hooray, shocking uncle tried not in vain.

image

The netbook 1008P-KR is definitely good - given the battery life, such an assistant can come in handy for many places - be it a CarPC with a WiMAX module, a difficult student time, or just workdays. And, importantly, the price also has.
“ Hello, Rashid? My friend, and we are looking for you. Oh, yes, there are thousands of questions! "(© Casta). Indeed, you can also search for such a netbook;) Well, or at least include the model in the list of candidates for purchase (if you need a netbook) - it will definitely be among the leaders there.

Successes!
