Asus reader and a bit about SiPix technology

ASUS has announced a new DR-900 reader at CeBIT 2010.

Boomburum , as usual, has already told a little about it . Characteristics are traditional: the reader has a 9-inch screen, equipped with 4 GB of memory, a music player, a 3.5 mm audio jack and a Wi-Fi controller. You can connect the 3G-module. Screen resolution - 1024 × 768. Understands PDF, TXT, ePUB and MP3.

But it is interesting, in general, not this (especially since we have already seen all this). And the fact that this is one of the first readers made using SiPix technology. Under the cut a couple of paragraphs about what kind of animal and what are its advantages / disadvantages

As it is known to fans of electronic readers, screens made using E-Ink technology occupy almost 100% of the market. And where there is no competition, there is no price reduction. But here SiPix entered the market, offering cheaper screen manufacturing technology. So what are the differences?

E-Ink screens use two suspensions to form an image: black and white. Microcapsules of SiPix screens are filled with a suspension of only one color - white. Black points of the image are created by immersing a white suspension in a black liquid. As a result, the technology is simplified, and, as a result, it becomes cheaper. However, the result of this approach is that the reflectivity of SiPix screens is worse than that of E-Ink screens. As a result, the Sipix screens will appear slightly grayer.

So, should we wait for price cuts? At first, I think prices will be the same as for traditional books or even higher. If only because it is more expensive to start and debug production than to skim the cream off the already established one. But the fact that players like Asus are entering the market gives hope for a rapid formation of sales and, as a result, for a fall in prices. In addition, the design of the device from Asus I really like it. What do you think?

================================================

UPD: in the comment several times it sounded that, they say, why is it so gray needed. Let's not rush to conclusions. First, a little grayer does not mean that it is completely gray. The first generation of e-ink was also more current. And nothing, the devices were great. Secondly, let's wait for the real reviews from the same boomburum. I think he will make comparative photos with the same PRS-505.

Recall the situation with HD-media players. While there were only Sigma chips, the prices were exorbitant, but realtek chips appeared and the same Asus released the wonderful Asus O! Play.

So the situation with electronic ink displays is only improving. And only we, the users, will benefit from all this.
