The Freescale processor will reduce the price of "readers" to $ 150

New development from the company Freescale - the world's first processor, designed specifically for e-book readers, can significantly reduce the cost of their component base. The cost price will decrease to such an extent that in retail sales “reading rooms” can fall in price to $ 150, experts are sure .

The SoC (system-on-chip) i.MX508 chip integrates the ARM Cortex A8 processor at 800 MHz, as well as the display controller from E Ink. Compared with previous models, performance has doubled with significantly lower power consumption.

If on modern devices the page is rendered from 1.5 to 3 seconds, then the new processor can reduce this time to 0.5 seconds.

This is the first SoC in the world specifically for "readers". Previously, they had to use general-purpose processors, so the layout of the electronics was suboptimal. The cost of i.MX508 for wholesale deliveries is about $ 10, that is, it is quite possible to cheapen the “reading room” by $ 30-50. The most expensive component is still the display E Ink.

Today, Freescale processors are installed on most e-book readers, from Kindle to Sony Reader. The company controls about 90% of the market.
