AMD puma sneaks up on Intel Centrino

Advanced Micro Devices has finally prepared its response to Intel Centrino, an energy-saving processor for laptops codenamed Griffin, and the Puma platform based on it. This move should strengthen AMD's position in competition with Intel in the fast-growing notebook market.

The massive production of the Griffin processor is due to start at the end of this year, and Puma based laptops are expected in mid-2008, said Maurice Steinman of AMD.
Intel has been manufacturing processors with a laptop-optimized architecture since 2003, regularly releasing new models. As a result, the ratio between the shares of Intel and AMD in the laptop market is better for Intel compared to other market segments.
Griffin is the first AMD processor specially designed for laptops. Previously, AMD was selling versions of its processors designed for laptops, but these were standard processors with an enhanced power saving feature.
In Griffin, two processor cores and an integrated memory controller are located in independent power circuits. Thus, two of the three components mentioned can go into a “sleep” state, while the third will continue to work. The memory controller can also operate at reduced voltage.
In addition, the Griffin will be able to "switch speeds" and reduce speed in those moments when maximum performance is not required. Independent cores Griffin will be able to reduce the speed to one eighth of the maximum clock frequency. Thus, a 2.4 GHz processor can save energy by operating at 300 MHz.
Initially, the processor will be released on the technology of 65 nanometers. Each core will contain 1 MB of cache.
At the same time, Puma could create some “diplomatic” problems for AMD. For years, AMD fooled Centrino, claiming that this platform fully binds manufacturers and customers to Intel products. And now AMD, which some time ago acquired the manufacturer of microcircuits and graphics accelerators ATI Technologies, launches the Puma platform, based solely on AMD products.
