Who gets how much from each sold game?

Have you ever wondered where your 60 bucks spent on a video game go? And here is where:

Video game anatomy

The main part of the information on this diagram became known thanks to a slide that was demonstrated today by Steve Perlman, founder of the online service OnLive, which will be launched this year.

So how is the money distributed and how much does the publisher actually get? Of the nominal $ 60 the store itself leaves about 25%, that is, 15 bucks, the remaining $ 45 actually goes to the publisher, such as Activision and Electronic Arts. But that's not all. They, in turn, pay $ 7 to console makers: Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft. There are 38 dollars left, 4 of which cover the costs of production, packaging and delivery of disks, and another 7 go to cover the costs associated with the return of unsold lots of disks.

In the end, the publisher has on hand about $ 27 from each disc sold, and this despite the fact that you still need to cover the costs of developing the game and its promotion. Of course, something in the diagram is not taken into account, and the numbers are averaged and can vary in one direction or another, in particular, the publisher can achieve lower license fees, but the order of distribution of money remains about the same in any case.

It turns out that the publisher really hurts the most, but not as much as I personally always thought.
