The authoritative source of statistical information on the .ru and .su stat.nic.ru zones has long been used as the main “peeler” among Russian hosters and registrars. It is clear that the error in the work of the service is inevitable and permissible within reasonable limits, but the data collected on this output surprised me a lot.
For the experiment, I took a list of all domains registered in the zone. Ru (taken in the public domain, who needs - google). The list, dated December 10, 2006, contained 694542 domains. With the help of a simple script, name servers were defined for each domain. Those who wish to repeat: use host, dig - as you like more. For each name server, the number of supported domains was calculated. Thus, an alternative rating was made. Here are the TOP-20 DNS servers for December 10 according to stat.nic.ru (my data is in brackets):
1. ns1.masterhost.ru. 49510 (47549)

As you can see, the numbers displayed in the RuCenter statistics are higher than those I received. How could this happen? Having rummaged in the received results I came to a conclusion that the data for statistics of stat.nic.ru are taken from whois. It is known that if the domain was delegated to its name servers, and then for some reason, either the name servers stopped responding, or the zone was deleted or corrupted, the domain remains in the “Delegated” status and the whois remain in “whois” servers. However, in this case, the zone for the domain will be unavailable and it will not be possible to get a list of the name servers. Therefore, the Center, based on whois data, continues to take into account in its statistics even those domains for which specific name servers are no longer located.
It should be noted that from the point of view of terminology, delegation is the entry of information about authorized name servers for a domain name. Those. The very status of domain delegation does not guarantee the availability of the zone. However, this feature rather strongly distorts information about actually serviced domains on his name servers at this particular point in time.
