Portrait of a Hollywood Hacker

Irish programmer Damien Gordon (Damian Gordon) analyzed 50 Hollywood films over the past half century, which were attended by computer hackers, starting with the very first hacker character Peter Ustinov in the history of cinematography from the movie “ Hot Millions ” (1968). By the way, according to Gordon, this is the most plausible image of a hacker from all the films he watched.

The result of the analysis was unexpected: hackers are not at all teenagers, as is commonly believed. It turned out that the average age of a hacker in Hollywood films is more than 30 years.

In 73% of cases it is a positive character, in 17% - negative, in 10% - an intermediate type. Only 20% of Hollywood hackers are students, 32% work in the IT industry.

Gordon also revealed the main mistakes of Hollywood screenwriters. It turns out that they absolutely do not understand the hacker software, but they always try to show close-ups of the computer monitor. But it is enough to explore Youtube to find real videos with hacker interfaces (for example, here you can see ZuesBuilder GUI from the Zeus toolkit at 1:48).

The second major mistake is that hackers in films succeed too quickly and easily. Within a few seconds they are able to hack any system and pick up any password.

It is believed that Hollywood shows hackers as teenagers. According to Gordon, the widespread opinion about the wrong image of a hacker in films is related to the peculiarities of perception. There are some weak films where hackers are shown extremely incorrectly, and these films sink deep into memory. Any one film with an unrealistic teenage hacker can ruin the reputation created by ten normal films, where the hacker is a competent and intelligent specialist.
