“King of Modding 2009”, category “NVIDIA ION” - results (1/7)

Probably, many habroses are not up to date, but the King of Modding (or Modding-Oscar) competition has been held for the second year already in the Runet - a professional award for specialists in the field of modifying the look and functionality of PCs, components and peripherals. The competition is organized by the projects www.modding.ru , www.occlub.ru and your humble servant :). I must say that I did not use the word “professional” for nothing, because for many participants modding gradually turned from a hobby into a vocation or profession that already brings them real money, and even experienced experts in industrial design will envy their ideas. The development of interfaces and communications is doing its job :).

NVIDIA ION

This year there is one rather unusual one in the lists of nominations. This is the category of creating custom casings for the NVIDIA ION platform — a competition in a competition initiated by NVIDIA .



I must say that this idea found warm support from the modders themselves, since the value of the NVIDIA ION platform is difficult to overestimate. ION is, without exaggeration, a unique phenomenon in the market of modern IT. Technology has come to the level where the home multimedia center has become not a luxury, but an affordable way for a wide range of users to get high-quality digital home entertainment at a more than affordable price. This is confirmed by the output of a large number of compact multi-format specialized HDMI devices, and the appearance of external drives with the function of broadcasting multimedia content, such as the popular WD TV Live , but a full-fledged computer still gives much more universal possibilities of its use and almost complete freedom to update the used software. The only thing that until recently was restrained by the rapid growth of ITX-systems - this is very low performance. With the release of the Intel Atom processor family, this problem was solved, and being in a very advantageous position before a competitor who could not use the "blue" processors, NVIDIA took the only right step - combined them with its effective mobile graphics and got a "bomb" that blew up market. Indeed, it is very convenient to carry a full-fledged computer with you in a briefcase that is slightly larger than an external hard disk and doesn’t cost much more. All functions and data with you - at home (in any place), at work, at a party.
Not surprisingly, NVIDIA ION- based devices have become a real fetish for modders around the world who have begun to create real works of art and home interior from Ionov. Where they just did not build! In vases, in bonsai, in vintage objects, etc. etc. Russian modders have not lagged behind their Western colleagues, and I want to offer your attention the best of the works sent to the King of Modding 2009 .

Rules and prizes

But first - a couple of words about the rules and prizes. The ION competition was held in two categories: “Visualization” and “Implementation” . In the "Visualization" category , any housing projects for the NVIDIA ION platform, made in 3D or graphics , were accepted. The Realization nomination was attended by cases for the NVIDIA ION platform, brought to life. Applications were received in the form of detailed photographs and worklogs (diaries of work published on the Internet). As an object for the creation of the case was proposed motherboard Zotac IONITX-BE . Seven of these motherboards were presented to modders, who presented at the beginning of the competition the best projects of the future cases. For this help, I would like to express my gratitude to Zotac - without them, some of the very beautiful projects would not be seen.



The level of prizes provided by NVIDIA and its partners surprised even us, experienced organizers:
