Today is the international day of all "IT people"

As I wrote in my blog , International Information Society Day is celebrated worldwide today. The holiday is dedicated to the popularization of the Internet, as well as infocommunication technologies in general throughout the world.

On 27 March 2006, the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution Resolution A / RES / 60/252, which proclaims May 17 as International Information Society Day.

International Telecommunications Day was celebrated on May 17, and this is connected with the creation of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in 1865. This event focused the attention of the international community on the activities of the ITU and on the challenges facing international communications. ITU contributed to the development of communications in the world from telegraphy to modern communications and the information space. In recognition of the efforts made to develop telecommunications, the World Summit on the Information Society, which took place in two phases: in Geneva in 2003 and in Tunis in 2005, the Tunis Agenda for the Development of the Information Society was adopted. And the Appeal to the UN General Assembly to declare May 17th as World Information Society Day.

The “Tunisian Program for the Development of the Information Society” should promote the popularization of the Internet throughout the world in order to make it an accessible means of communication throughout the world. The goal of this action is to promote annual awareness raising about the importance of this global tool, about the opportunities offered by the widespread use of ICT, as well as about how to overcome digital divide at the global level.

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, in his statement on the proclamation of the Information Society Day on May 17, noted the importance of increasing user confidence in ICT. He stressed that in the modern world, shrouded in one common Network, the society has many threats, including deliberate attacks on important information objects, which leads to a weakening of the economy and society as a whole. In order to increase confidence in e-commerce, in e-banking systems, in telemedicine, in e-government, there is a need for general cohesion in information security issues at the international level. And since it depends on the security policy of every country, business and every citizen, it is necessary to develop an information security culture at the international level.

Kofi Annan called on all UN member states and interested parties to contribute to the growth of the global level of knowledge in the field of information security and the development of international initiatives and general measures to counter risks in this area. The UN Secretary-General emphasized the importance of this fact for the continued growth of the economies of all countries and, in particular, for developing regions. Kofi Annan noted that building a free and secure information society will be the impetus for universal development in the world.
