Presentation of the innovative service OnLive! in las vegas

Throughout the year, Steve Perlman told us about the OnLive service. And so, on February 18, at the DICE Summit in Las Vegas, he showed it in action.

At the moment, the service is in beta test. Contrary to skeptics predictions, OnLive is functioning, and without any obvious failures. Perlman has demonstrated that it is possible to play dynamic shooters without the active participation of the user's computer in handling the game.

In case the service is finally launched, it will open the mass market of digital distribution of games, as a result of which the cost of these will be reduced. There will also be no need to buy different gaming platforms for the sake of one game.

“The buyer gains gaming experience without caring for the platforms,” comments Perlman.

We worked on the service for eight years, creating a compression technology that allows you to send content over the network almost in real time. In this case, the delay is measured in milliseconds. When playing in SD, you need to connect to the Internet at a speed of 1 Mbps. You can also play in HD, the required channel width is 5 Mbps. According to Perlman, in 26% of users the speed exceeds 5 megabits, 71% of the potential audience is connected to the Internet at least 2 Mb / s.

In OnLive will be a means of communication between users. Moreover, you can watch the actions of your friend in the game and simultaneously send him messages.

Mike McGarvey, together with Steve Perlman, showed the audience "live" Unreal Tournament and Burnout Paradise. When entering the multiplayer mode, we previously saw a list of servers and boring map screenshots. All this is in the past. OnLive shows us live video from the current match right on the menu! Perlman mentioned the video game capture feature built into the service. You can easily show the match to your friends and acquaintances.

All games are loaded almost instantly. From launch to the appearance of the main menu of Unreal Tournament 3, it took just a few seconds!

At the time of the demonstration, the server was in San Francisco. Let me remind you, the presentation took place in Las Vegas, which is 500 miles away. Four more data centers are expected to open in Dallas, Atlanta, Chicago and Washington before launch.

To everyone's surprise, the Perlman team showed the public how to play the iPhone on ... Crysis! The game has not been modified, the full version, except on a small screen.

"The gaming market is ripe for OnLive," says Perlman. “If we do not create such a service, trust me, someone else will do it.”
