Outlook Social Connector integrates with social networks

Microsoft is trying to add social functionality to its desktop organizer Outlook. They want to turn it into a kind of online communication center, where users can read fresh messages from social networks.

Today the company has released the beta version of the Outlook Social Connector plugin, this is the Outlook plugin announced in November. It works like this: when the user opens a letter, a new panel appears where the information from the social networks where the sender is registered is uploaded.

So far, only LinkedIn is supported, and Facebook and MySpace promise to add by June, that is, by the release of Office 2010.

I must say that this is an interesting idea, but not a new one. A small startup Xobni has already developed an add-on for Outlook, which works in much the same way. The basic version is free, extended costs $ 30.

The new Microsoft plug-in de facto turns Outlook into a primitive social network, at least suitable for collaboration on documents. For example, if the sender of the letter and the addressee together edit one document stored on the Sharepoint server, an automatic message will be sent to both of them when one of them corrects it.

At the moment, the program does not allow updating information on Facebook sites or on twitter directly from Outlook, but, obviously, such functionality is not far off.
