Data centers are cooled by wind.

In the north-east of England, near the town of Billingham , a data center was commissioned with a unique cooling system that uses an icy wind from the North Sea. Climatic conditions are such that the wind blows steadily and constantly, and always almost in one direction. For a data center ventilation system, these are ideal conditions.

Air flows from the atmosphere are first passed through filters (I wonder how they filter the salty air?), And then through eight 2.2-meter fans they go directly to the server racks: see the virtual tour of the building . Thus, a constant temperature of 24 ° C is maintained in the workroom of the data center. When the wind gets too cold, in the ventilation system it is slightly warmed up from heat exchangers that remove heat from the servers.

The Wynyard data center is built by an EDS contractor for HP.

In the wind-driven data center, everyone is provided with regular fans that are activated in the absence of wind. That is, this is not a one hundred percent "green" project: for example, Google and Microsoft have data centers without any fans at all.

The energy efficiency of Wynyard is 1.2 PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness), that is, for every 1.2 watts of equipment power, 1 watt is consumed for cooling. It is the most energy efficient among all HP data centers. In conventional data centers, the indicator is 2 PUE, and in the most energy-efficient buildings of recent times - at least 1.5 PUE.

The announcement of the environmental data center Wynyard took place a year ago, and now its construction is fully completed. The building has a working area of 8100 m 2 .

Probably, for Russia these are topical technologies, because a third of the country's territory is located in the permafrost, many large cities near the Arctic Circle, and in the same St. Petersburg weather conditions are quite close to Northern England.
