Results of the All-Russian census of freelancers

The Higher School of Economics (HSE), together with the Free-lance.ru website, conducted a nationwide census of freelancers . The survey took place in December 2008, about 15,000 people took part in it. The results are published today in the newspaper Vedomosti.

On the site alone Free-lance.ru registered half a million users, including 300 thousand performers. 30 thousand new projects are registered monthly.

Almost 70% of all Russian freelancers live in the country's 14 largest regions.
Slightly less than a third (31%) live in Moscow, 11% in St. Petersburg, 5% in the Moscow Region, 3% each in the Rostov, Sverdlovsk and Novosibirsk regions, etc.

The charts below show the advantages and disadvantages of such work, according to the results of the freelancers survey.

The average monthly income of a freelancer is 30,000 rubles. At the same time, 7% of remote workers receive more than 75,000 rubles, and top freelancers can earn up to $ 10,000 per month. The biggest earnings in advertising, marketing and consulting, the least get copywriters and translators. Web programming specialists are somewhere in the middle.

According to the census results, the majority of Russian freelancers (79%) are under 30 years old. 55% of freelancers have higher education, that is, the education of freelancers is noticeably higher than the average education of working residents of Russia.

44% of respondents combine freelancing with work in the state.

Most freelancers work at home, but many of them do not have a special room (office).

Freelancers can afford to work on inspiration.

In terms of work plans, freelancers are very ambitious. 39% of all freelancers plan to become entrepreneurs. Most will combine freelancing with another job 44%. Only 9% want to work only as freelancers. And only about 5% want to turn into office workers. Data on various categories of freelancers are presented in the diagram.

The views of freelancers and Russians in general about work are very different. For freelancers, the most important aspect of work is an interesting job, while for Russians it’s good pay. Freelancers are much more eager to take initiative in their work and achieve their professional goals. At the same time, many traditional values are not at all close to them: interest in a safe place of work, not too hard work and long vacation (they are called 2-3 times fewer people than among Russians in general).
