Chip Armada 618 from Marvell will allow smartphones to work with HD-video

Marvell has released information about its new processor, designed for use in hi-end smartphones and communicators. The chip, called Armada 618, according to Marvell representatives, will allow mobile devices to handle 1080p HD video processing.

The 12-mn new product operates at 1 GHz, equipped with HD video encoding / decoding tools, as well as an engine that features support for DirectX, Open GL ES 2.0 and Open VG 1.1. Armada 618 can render up to 45 million triangles per second, and its screen controller is capable of outputting the image to four displays, with the maximum picture quality being 2000x2000 pixels.

The processor is compatible with Linux (more precisely, with a Linux-based OS), as well as with Google Android and Windows Mobile.

Armada 618 will be shown on February 15-18 in Barcelona at the Mobile World Congress 2010. The terms of mass production have not yet been named.
