In the near future, terabyte SSD drives will be the size of a postage stamp.
SSD drives have not yet managed to achieve great popularity in the market, but a team of Japanese researchers are already engaged in improving the feasibility of using them. They claim that they are already developing a technology that will reduce the size of drives by at least 90%, make them cheaper and increase their energy efficiency by 70%.
The research team consists of people from several different institutions, including Toshiba and the University of Keyo in Tokyo, which is managed by a fairly well-known professor Tadahiro Kuroda.
The new technology will make possible the production of terabyte SSD drives, which will be the size of a small postage stamp. The current prototype (in the photo) is equipped with a 128 NAND memory chip and one controller chip. It boasts a data transfer rate of 2 gigabits per second. Practical samples are expected in 2012.
