Zimbra, a major e-mail application giant, has released the first beta version of its second generation Zimbra Desktop 2 e-mail client. Let me remind you that Zimbra was recently acquired from
Yahoo , the virtualization giant
VmWare .
Zimbra Desktop is a cross-platform email client created using the Mozilla Prism technology. Which contains, in addition to mail, the functions of an organizer, a task manager, a portfolio, a calendar and much more. Actually, this is in my opinion the best alternative to Microsoft Outlook.
')
Zimbra Desktop can be integrated both into the native Zimbra Collaboration Suite server (a free alternative to Exchange), and into various mail services: Gmail, Yahoo mail, AOL, Microsoft Exenge IMAP, and any other POP / IMAP servers. It is also one of the first customers to support the “Offline” mode of operation.
We should not forget about the zimlet framework. Zimlet is a mini client application that greatly simplifies the work. For example, you can install a zimlet-translator or maps from google, they will search for addresses, phone numbers in letters and make of them links to the map area. Recently, I talked about the
social Zimlet - which integrates the user's work environment with social networks Facebook, Twiter and others.
Changes (major) compared to Zimbra Desktop 1:• Multi-account UI
• Virtual Mailboxes
• Cross-shared shared address book
• Improved compatibility with Zimbra Collaboration Suite 6.0. *
• Improved interface.
• Installation is done now in Winodws (Program Files), on Mac in (/ Applications.)
• The installation method has been reworked, on Windows it is now an MSI package, on a Mac it is a dmg, on Linux it’s just TGZ.
• ZD has become multi-user. You can put to all users in the system.
Performance:Compared with the first version (1.0. *) Zimbra Desktop 2 has become more efficient. The second version switched to SQLite. Slightly reduced consumption of RAM.
Personal impressions:There are no special external changes compared to Zimbra Desktop 1. The interface is the same in principle. Memory eats a little less.
