New and old Wikimedia Foundation headquarters in San Francisco

You have already seen the offices of various commercial companies. Do you want to see where the employees of a non - profit organization serving one of the 10 most visited sites in the world work? In my opinion it is very interesting.
By the way, a Russian employee appeared in October - a photo in the set.

Tampa: location The Wikimedia Foundation’s office moved from St. Petersburg (Florida) to San Francisco on Stallman Stillman Street, 39 (look at OpenStreetMap , on other maps ) between January 24 and 29, 2008, but 1.5 years later of the growing number of employees, they moved again, and on October 19-20, 2009, they already occupied the entire third floor of the building at 149 New Montgomery Street (look at OpenStreetMap , on other maps ).

The office in St. Petersburg was simply because Jimmy Wales lived and still lives. Let me remind you that the servers of the Wikimedia Foundation are still located in the city of Tampa, next to St. Petersburg (aaa! Hurricanes !!!), and the organization itself is still registered under the law of Florida.

In the center, facing the photographer is MediaWiki developer Tim Starling . Since it doubled the speed of the parser every year, October 31st, Wikipedians around the world celebrate Tim Starling Day . Starling is the husband of Angela Beazley , co-founder of the commercial company Wikia .

The one who stands is Matt Halprin , a member of the Board of Attorneys, the highest governing body of the Wikimedia Foundation . In the background, the logo has a cardboard Vibber, which will be discussed below.
image

Esperanto player Brion Vibber did what he did, but in September 2009 Chief Chief Officer left his post . Now cardboard "chef" Brion Vibber serves everyone personally. On June 1 of each year, in honor of Brion Vibber, Wikipedians around the world make a toast and greet each other in Esperanto .
image

Together with Wibber, the inventor of the wiki (1994-1995) is Ward Cunningham . He named the first wiki engine after the “Wiki Wiki Shuttle” bus in Hawaii .

Again a cardboard vibe.

SoMa , Stillman Street, 39 (old office)

Some strange story is connected with this office on carefully concealing its location and clearing its photos from Wikipedia. According to unverified information, the staff of the Wikimedia Foundation were afraid of suicide attacks from bombs from one of the opposing Wikipedia sites.

This office can also be seen in this video ( download , Russian version in Theora ):

Below are only photos after the move. Pictures before shopping and moving can be viewed on Wikimedia Commons .
