Free H.264 extended to 2016
MPEG LA extended (PDF) the free license for the H.264 codec until 2016. This refers to a license for “Internet video broadcasting, which is free for end users”, that is, non-commercial video and projects such as YouTube, well, and ordinary webmasters can breathe easy: no one will disturb them for the next six years.
What will happen after that is not known, because the last patent in the MPEG LA portfolio expires only in 2028 , so that until that time the technology will not become free. However, in 18 years, a bunch of new formats will probably appear and the problem may disappear by itself.
