Carriers are dying ...

At least among the IT prosvyaschennogo kontengent (read: among habrachelovekov).

A year and a half ago, I conducted a survey where it turned out that about 60% of habrayuders are still using optical drives anyway.

At about the same time, I wrote a post about the imminent death of carriers , which caused a small but productive discussion. My main thesis was that in addition to purely material economic reasons, media carriers do not die only due to the habit and fetish of collecting.

What do we have today? And whether my predictions are confirmed?

To some extent, yes. And you can see this for yourself by looking at the results of the same survey conducted now.

Only one and a half years passed and already about 60% practically do not use optical drives. The number of people who frequently use drives has decreased 2.5 times (from 20% to 8%). Moreover, the number of people has almost doubled (from 3% to 8%), who don’t have an optical drive at all. And here, apparently played a role in the distribution of netbooks.

How the situation will develop further, what do you think?

UPD: I warn you that they mean, first of all, the media on which the media content is delivered to the consumer. That is, external frigals disappear, and flash drives almost too. Don't forget that services like Dropbox , which are becoming more and more spacious, are spreading. In addition, Chrome OS is just around the corner.

UPD2: Note: the topic has a loud name and a modest beginning. Naturally globally, there is no question of any death. The sample is representative only for Habr (however, I think it is quite relevant for ITshnikov around the world). In addition, it can be assumed that something is happening to the IT elite now (I hope it doesn’t sound too pathetic), then it will be borrowed by other content agents.
