The share of OpenOffice in the office software market in Germany has grown to 21.5%,
according to analytical agency Webanalyse. Surprisingly, there is practically no difference among home and corporate users.

By the way, Webanalyse experts used an interesting method for calculating statistics through an online
flash counter : they analyzed the fonts installed on computers. Since office suites come with unique font sets (for example, OpenSymbol in OpenOffice), then by their presence in the system you can say with a large degree of confidence which packages are installed there.
For OpenOffice and other packages, the error is only 0.5 pp, but for MS Office, due to the specifics, the error is quite large (10 pp). The fact is that the trial version of MS Office for 60 days comes with every new computer in Germany, and after its expiration almost no one deletes unnecessary fonts, so all these people are counted as regular users. In reality, the proportion of MS Office users may be much less than indicated in the statistics.

Another problem with this technique is that it is impossible to determine the percentage of users of online office suites, such as Google Docs.
Despite all the shortcomings, the fonts are measured fairly accurately reflect the share of OpenOffice, and this was the main purpose of the study. The rate of 21.5% looks quite impressive, whatever you say.
