It so happened that I don’t feed me with bread - give me something to drink. Perhaps the long work in ArchLinux was not in vain, maybe - just such a nature. In general, I will describe my own experience of refining Xubuntu 9.10 to fit your needs. Everything I did was divided into stages. So, we start with the removal of unnecessary.
Stage 1 - Removal of unnecessary.
Why did I delete these packages - I will tell below, now I will just list everything that has been deleted.
First of all, I removed
Xsplash - I don’t have any sense from it, but it affects the load time. I'm thinking about cutting out the
GDM - anyway, a single-user computer. Then ruthlessly removed
AbiWord and
GnuMeric . I did not ignore multimedia - I removed
exaile and totem . From system gadgets - removed the load of Gnome services, respectively, deleted
Gnome-screensaver .
Gcalctool is also
deleted . Well, everything seems to be. In the process of work, I deleted something else, but this is already narrowly specific :) We proceed to the next stage.
Stage 2 - Installing the Required
Instead of standard gnumeric and abiword, I installed
OpenOffice.org . To play music set
mpd + sonata , video -
vlc . installed
xscreensaver - it is lighter than gnome-screensaver, and does the same. Instead, gcalctool decided to use
SpeedCrunch - a great thing, a very fast and powerful calculator. To view the Windows-network - installed
smbnetfs (for some reason, fuse constantly crashes with errors). Naturally,
samba was also installed. Firefox has changed to
Swiftfox - the same, but on "steroids". By the way, this step can bring down the browser localization — you will have to separately configure it. I installed the same
gmrun and hung it on ALT + F2 - I like it more than the standard quick launch. Put
Tilda - an indispensable thing, if you work in the console.
Finished installing
sysv-rc-conf to proceed to the next stage.
')
Stage 3 - System Optimization
Actually, there was no deep optimization - I removed unnecessary services in sysrv-rc-conf (I don’t specifically write which ones - here everyone decides for himself). Description is here. Now I’m looking towards initNG, but I don’t decide yet.
Stage 4 - Other buns and beautiful
It so happened that I made my theme for xfce. Who cares -
here . In addition - I made my own theme for usplash (I will write about it in detail in the next topic). Very nice buns give different keybindings - you should definitely think about what and how to run.
The result was a comfortable and pleasing working environment. Naturally, everyone has different tastes and someone will not like my version. However, many may be interesting.
