Recently I got into the hands of the PS3, and without any games at all. By the edge of my ear, I already heard somewhere what a media server is, but I still could not try. I thought that watching TV shows and movies on my laptop is the ideal solution, which is better to come up with. Progress does not stand still.
The first thing an adequate person will do with the PS3 is connect to the TV. So I did, using my home Phillips c 32 inches and support for HD 1080p (not to be confused 1080i).

Then an old and weak, but very quiet computer with a huge HDD was lying around my house. It has Ubuntu 9.10. I put the
PS3 media server on it . Setting up the server took 2 minutes and no complicated hand movements. The server itself is written in
Java for this reason it can work on linux as well as on Windows or Mac. The project account is located on Google code, and anyone can read the source code.
The principle of connecting devices to the server is shown below. It is very convenient when home devices have a wi-fi module.

Now turn on the PS3, and look for the media server, and we can choose a video or music.

The last thing I would like to add is that ps3 doesn’t support many video formats, but the ps3 media server can transcode video from one format to another in real time. Transcoding depends on the codecs that are installed on the computer, so you should put all the necessary codec libraries. For linux, I downloaded Mplayer (in the dependencies it drags all the necessary codecs), and for Windows it’s worth downloading k-lite. The main transcoding parameter is (FPS) / (Image quality), you can flexibly adjust to your processor speed and the type of connection between the server and PS3 (ethernet or wi-fi).
