The term “DRM” is wanted to be replaced because it has become an abusive

For a normal person, the abbreviation “DRM” (“digital rights management”) does not cause anything but irritation. Too bad image has earned itself this technology, which delivers a lot of headaches to millions of people about the whole world.

Leaders of media corporations also see that the public is extremely negative about DRM. But they make absolutely amazing conclusion. According to their conviction, the reason for rejection is not in the technology itself, but in ... an ugly name. The abbreviation DRM means some restrictions, but you need to talk about the possibilities. They say that it is enough to change the abbreviation and everything will miraculously change. Alternatively, they offer “DCE”, that is, “Digital Consumer Enablement”, which can be translated as “digital consumer exemption”.

This original proposal was put forward by HBO's technical director Bob Zitter, speaking to colleagues at the NCTA congress. Bob bluntly stated: "I no longer want to use the term DRM."

Zitter said that simultaneously with the change of abbreviation, it was necessary to expand the scope of its application by cable television providers. Under the brand DCE, they can offer a number of new services that are pleasant to the consumer. For example, downloading content to burn to a user's DVD. At the same time, the operators will make good money on the sale of new set-top boxes with built-in DVD recorders, on reducing costs after abandoning their own DVD production and, finally, on selling content. Another option is to broadcast HDTV films on the same day as they appear in film distribution.

Maybe these services will really be in demand, but this does not change the essence of the idea. Instead of abandoning obviously unpopular technology, media corporations just want to change its name. Obviously, they do not imagine the possibility of doing business in a free flow of information.
