The first since 2000, the replenishment of the family of general purpose domain zones (gTLDs) can take place as early as next summer. ICANN announced the start of a public discussion on the procedure for creating new domain zones. What they will be will be solved by an open tender.
The previous replenishment of gTLDs took place in 2000. Then ICANN approved seven new domain zones, but only two of them became relatively popular: it’s .info and .biz. In 2004, new zones were added: regional and thematic, but not for general use. The new gTLDs extension procedure is not yet clearly spelled out. For discussion, the proposed scheme is shown in the diagram below. The final scheme may be approved by the end of the year, and then applications for new gTLDs will begin to be accepted in early 2008. According to experts, consideration and approval of applications and the addition of new zones to the DNS system may be completed in June-August 2008.
