Microsoft requires $ 43 million from Lithuanian torrent tracker

Microsoft has sued LinkoManija, the largest torrent tracker in Lithuania, namely its former owner Kestas Hermanas. The corporation demands damages in the amount of $ 43 million, although, according to local legislation, the maximum amount of compensation in such cases cannot exceed $ 53 thousand.

Interestingly, Kestas said a month ago that he no longer intends to engage in a torrent tracker, but apparently he will have to answer in court for his past activities. He is accused of spreading pirated versions of MS Office 2003 and 2007.

This raises another question: is the owner of the torrent tracker responsible for the illegal activity of users? One way or another, but the accounts of Hermanas are already frozen. This is a rather rare case when such measures are taken immediately after filing a lawsuit, and not after a trial.

LinkoManija is among the ten most visited sites on the Lithuanian Internet. According to the owner of the torrent tracker, until now he has not received any complaints from Microsoft or any requirements to remove illegal content.

At the same time, court cases are being prepared for 106 LinkoManija users. The hearings on the first of these cases will begin in February.
