Ubisoft has found an alternative to DRM

French publisher Ubisoft plans to abandon the use of DRM technology, which imposes restrictions on the installation and activation of games, in its new computer games. However, the decision was not made in order to make life easier for the players - the publishers simply had a new idea.

Instead of checking the availability of the original disc and counting the number of activations, the new system will require the presence of a mandatory Internet connection. Now users will have to go to the Ubisoft website under their account, and then get the right to start the game.

“Suppose you have hundreds of computers — you can install the game on all machines,” explains Brent Wilkinson (Brent Wilkinson) from Ubisoft, who added that after each game session the data will be stored on the server so that you can continue the game from any other from their computers. According to the description, very similar to Steam Cloud.

However, there is one little problem. If you do not have access to the Network, you will not be able to play licensed copies of the new Ubisoft computer games, starting with Settlers 7: Paths to a Kingdom, which will be released in March 2010.

The next question remains unclear - will this step help fight piracy or, on the contrary, will stimulate its further growth?
