In continuation of the topic of
3G-modem in Ubuntu .
Step-by-step description of the flashing of the
ZTE MF627 USB modem
locked under the MTS, for free working with third-party SIM cards with its subsequent configuration and testing of the operation on Windows XP, Windows7 and Ubuntu 9.10 axes with screenshots, links to alternative (free) software, etc. . etc.
Addition No. 1: now, thanks to
SerVik and his
post , our modem can make and receive calls.
Addition No. 2: this technique also applies to the ZTE MF626 modem.
Addition No. 3: For
Huawei modems from Megaphone, requiring
Unlock code, the option with firmware replacement will not work. Here, the issue is solved more simply by entering the NCK code on the device's IMEI. Those who want to get Unlock code for their Huawei can write to me in a personal or in the comments to this post. The validity of the calculator has been repeatedly tested by me on
Huawei E1550 modems from Megaphone. The service is provided "
... without a surrender, that is, for nothing ... ". All you need is an IMEI device.
Addition No. 4: according to the comment for June 27, 2010 from the Vyazovoi habrouseur , ZTE MF627 modems appeared in MTS salons, worth 490 rubles, with a new type of firmware (BD_MTSP673A4V1.0.0B02) requesting an Unlock code when installing a third-party SIM card. The following method of flashing to such devices has not been applied and as a result, I cannot predict the possible effect of it.
For those who have not yet purchased a modem, I recommend to stop at Huawei E1550 / 1750 from Megaphone or MTS. There are no problems with their unlock yet (see Addendum No. 3).
So, the ZTE MF627 USB modem was purchased by me on January 15, 2010 in the MTS branded store for 890 rubles. The purpose of the acquisition is access to the Internet on frequent and long trips across Russia.
Description of the device on the MTS website .
Before the purchase, many forums were read on the topic, because I had information in advance that the Big Three operators are limiting the firmware of the devices sold under their brand, which prevents them from being used with SIM cards of other operators. As a result, the choice fell on the
ZTE MF626 , which could not be found on sale (Moscow) and I, waving my hand, ventured to take a new at that time
ZTE MF627 , the benefit of the MTS gave it at the New Year price of 890 rubles.
Included was the modem itself, a guarantee for it and a SIM-card with docks. Everything. And more we do not need anything.

A visual inspection revealed an empty microSD card slot and a wonderful plastic strap that didn’t allow the cover to get lost. After that, the modem performance was checked on the Windows XP axis. Everything went as expected - after the modem was installed into the USB port, the autoload program worked, the drivers and the program for connecting to the
MTS Connect Manager Internet were automatically installed.
We use it to connect to the Internet, there is a connection, open a couple of pages, everything is ok. This means the modem + SIM-card from the MTS is quite efficient. We change the SIM card to a megaphone - the modem shuts up, put a beeline, the picture is the same. Also, attempts were made to change the initialization string in the properties of the modem, create a new connection with the parameters of the desired operator, disable / delete MTS Connect Manager, use alternative dialers, etc. etc.
The information is confirmed - this modem is “wired” under “its” operator: MTS. Well, it means everything is correct, the information from the forums is confirmed, this is what I expected and was almost ready to work. Why almost? And because I did not find the ZTE MF626, whereas there was no information on the ZTE MF627, except that the device is
probably the same hardware, only the appearance and firmware was changed.
Actually firmware:')

Manufacturer: ZTE INCORPORATED
Model: MF627
Revision: BD_MTSP673A4V1.0.0B02
+ GCAP: + CGSM, + FCLASS, + DSThe basis for the modem was chosen firmware from the bourgeois provider
Globe Telecom , posted on the official website of Globe as an update for the same ZTE MF626.
The firmware was made on Windows XP Pro SP3.
Firmware is recommended to carry out on a stationary computer using a USB port located directly on the motherboard. Using USB hubs, extension cords, etc. It is not recommended, moreover, it is desirable to disconnect from the computer all USB devices, including a USB mouse. SIM must be removed.
1.
Downloading (
mirror depositfiles )
MF626UpdateTool_GLOBE_PHV1.2.exe from the official website of Globe Telecom.
2. Insert the ZTE MF627 into a free USB port, wait for the installation of MTS Connect Manager and initialization of the device in the system.

3. Disable
MTS Connect Manager via Tray - Menu - Exit.

4. Run
MF626UpdateTool_GLOBE_PHV1.2.exe , click
Download . The firmware process will begin. Do not touch anything, waiting for the completion of the process. It took me 25 minutes to go through all the stages. During the flashing process, the MTS Connect Manager will be run periodically, no problem, these are the consequences of multiple device reboots.

Now we have two options for further work with the device.
Option number 1 - no longer requires any action on your part, except for setting up Globe Visibility Connection Manager , but it does not provide voice communication.
Option number 2 , proposed by SerVik , provides us with the possibility of voice communication and correction of errors in the transmission of data in online games, seen on the firmware for ZTE MF626. The work of third-party software in this version of the firmware is also supported.
We continue:
5. At the end of the firmware, disable the modem, uninstall the MTS Connect Manager and reconnect the modem, wait for the installation of the
Globe Visibility Connection Manager program in automatic mode. In principle, this is all, it remains only to create a profile in the
Globe Visibility Connection Manager corresponding to your carrier, after which you can work with any SIM card.
Configuring
Globe Visibility Connection Manager for example Megaphone:
5.1 Start the
Globe Visibility Connection Manager , click "Add".

5.2 Register the "
Connection Name ", "
Dial Number ", "
APN ", click "
OK ", then "
Set as default ".

R.S. Settings for operators differ in points:
"
Connection Name " - here you can enter an arbitrary name, in this case - Megaphone.
"
Dial Number " -
* 99 *** 1 # or
* 99 #"
APN " - This is an important point, each operator has his own:
Megaphone:
internet name and password is not required, leave blank.
Beeline:
internet.beeline.ru name:
beeline password:
beelineMTS:
internet.mts.ru name:
mts password:
mtsTele2:
internet.tele2.ru name and password is not required, leave blank.
Utel:
internet.usi.ru name and password is not required, leave blank.
This information is available on the help page of your operator.
5.3 Next, go to the "Internet" tab, select your profile, click "Connect".

Globe Visibility Connection Manager allows you to send / receive SMS, view / edit SIM contact list. By the way,
MTS Connect Manager is deprived of all this, strangely enough, because it is hardware provided for in the modem, and software developers from MTS could not be unaware of it.
PS Initially, the Russian interface is not supported in
Globe Visibility Connection Manager . To Russify the program, you need to download the
lan_RUS.rar archive (
mirror ,
depositfiles ), unpack it and install the
lan_ENG.dll file by the path
"\ Program Files \ Globe Visibility Connection Manager \ language" , replacing the original file.
Basically, that's all. If you are satisfied with the " Globe Visibility Connection Manager ", built into the autorun of the new firmware, then you do not need further items. This program will work with any operators after appropriate configuration. The only drawback: it will start automatically every time the modem is connected to the USB port . In case the default connection manager from Globe does not suit you or you want to use standard Windows / Linux / ets tools for the connection, I suggest a continuation:
6. Download the program QPST_2.7.323.
part1 ,
part2 (
mirror ,
depositfiles ).
(there are no more than 5 MB of file storage on the people), and therefore it is necessary to split the files into volumes. I use WinRAR 3.91. To unpack all parts, it is enough to run * .part1 , the other parts will be picked up automatically. It is important that all the parts be in one folder. I don’t want to use depositfiles, rapid and similar services, in order to avoid accusations of publishing referral links)
7. Install the program QPST_2.7.323. After installing the
QPST_2.7.323 program
, open the
QPST Configuration module, click the
Add new port ... button, uncheck the
Show Serial and USB / QC Diagnostic ports only box, select the
COM port on which the
ZTE Diagnostics Interface sits and click OK.

8. Now you can use the
EFS Explorer module, select the device on the port with
ZTE Diagnostics Interface . In a few seconds you will see the modem's file structure.

9. First of all, I recommend saving the modem's file structure to a local disk in order to always be able to roll back to the original one. To do this, selecting all the files and folders (CTRL + A), right-click on them, in the drop-down menu, go to "
Copy from Phone ... " as it is done in the screenshot:

Next, selecting the previously created folder on the disk, copy the contents of the modem into it:

To disable the CD emulation and autoload of the default program, to connect the device immediately as a USB modem, delete the file
CD_STARTUP_FLAG . Then disconnect and reconnect the modem to the USB port.

That's all, with
Option # 1 firmware finished. Now, when the device is connected to the USB port, we will have a standard
ZTE Proprietary USB Modem in the system, which is not tied to either the operator or any program. You can take the pelt nulevku and rip the egg - more than our device eggheads do not belong.
- Option number 2 , from SerVik :
1. After the end of the firmware from Globe, we disconnect and reconnect the modem, cancel the installation of the
Globe Visibility Connection Manager program (it starts in automatic mode).
2. Download the program QPST_2.7.323.
part1 ,
part2 (
mirror ,
depositfiles ).
3.
Download the PCUI.rar file (
mirror ,
depositfiles ), unzip it. This is an identifier file in which information about the firmware version is registered, in this case it is the original file from the MTS firmware. Opened with a notepad.
4. Install the program QPST_2.7.323. After installing the
QPST_2.7.323 program
, open the
QPST Configuration module, click the
Add new port ... button, uncheck the
Show Serial and USB / QC Diagnostic ports only box, select the
COM port on which the
ZTE Diagnostics Interface sits and click OK.

5. Now you can use the
EFS Explorer module, select the device on the port with
ZTE Diagnostics Interface . In a few seconds you will see the modem's file structure.

6. Next, we need to delete the
PCUI.VN file:

7. Then paste in its place the previously downloaded
PCUI.VN file (in clause 3):

8.
Download the latest firmware
from the MTS website (
mirror ) under "
Software Updates (18.7 MB) " and unpack it.
9. We take out the SIM-card from the modem, install it into a free USB port. Run the file
DL_MF627_MTS_RU_EUV1.00.02.exe . Click "Download", waiting for the end of the process. In my case, the whole process took 13 minutes.

10. At the end of the firmware, disable the modem, uninstall the
old MTS Connect Manager, connect the modem. The installation of the
new MTS Connect Manager will start automatically. And here it is the most delicious:
Start page:

The ability to enter a PIN code:

Outgoing voice calls (checked, works on all operators of the Big Three)

Incoming voice calls (checked, works on all operators of the big three)

And also: receiving / sending SMS, working with the address book of the SIM card, the ability to manually select the GPRS / EDGE / 3G network by and / or.
In the setup, the program is standard: register the APN of the desired operator, name and password. Everything is simple here. I checked with the SIM cards of three operators of the big three - everything works without comment.

Software and firmware specifications:

That's all. The device is ready for operation. When you connect a modem, you will run MTS Connect Manager, you will only need to register the APN and click the "Connect" button.
ZY I am not a fan of autoloads of any kind, and therefore went further:
1. Using QPST, deleted the AUTORUN.FLG file, and disabled the
AutoDect startup
point in Windows XP:

This does not interfere with the functionality of the program, but I can launch it myself.
Checking the operation of the ZTE MF627 modem (using the above described method, points 1 ... 9) on the Windows 7 and Linux axes. So:
1.
Windows 7 Ultimate - by default, firewood from XP did not rise, as a result we do the following.
1.1 Install using the
DAEMON Tools Lite image
ZTEMODEM.iso from the previously saved (using QPST_2.7.323) original firmware from MTS. Install
MTS Connect Manager (to initialize the device in Win7 system). Be sure to run
MTS Connect Manager , so that he creates a new connection "MTS Connect" in the network connections.
1.2. Using
Driver Genius Professional, I pulled out the drivers from the ZTE modem from Win7 and saved them into a separate folder (those who are not interested in such dances with a tambourine can download the driver archive
here (
mirror ) or on
the MTS website (
mirror ). In this case, items 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 can be skipped).
1.3. We delete
MTS Connect Manager (along with it all drivers are removed from the system). In principle,
MTS Connect Manager can be not deleted, but you will have to put up with the fact that it will start automatically every time a modem is detected on any of the USB ports. I set it for one purpose - installing drivers and then saving them.
1.4. Disconnect and reconnect the modem. Win7 detects a new device, requires a driver. We slip the drivers previously saved with Driver Genius Professional and voila, the device is initialized in the system. Then everything is simple and boring - we set up the
MTS Connect connection (or create a new connection), set the initialization string according to the operator in the properties of the modem, or simply launch an alternative dialer (about this at the end of the post).
2.
Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala - there are much fewer dances with a tambourine than those of small ones.
2.1. We connect ZTE MF627, go along the path: System> Settings> Network connections, then “Mobile broadband connections”, then “Add” and what do we see? And we see a remarkably well-defined ZTE device ... which we will configure:

2.2. We click "Forward" and further, following the prompts, set up the connection for a specific operator:

2.3. Next, go to the properties of the newly created connection and change it as shown in the screenshot:

2.4. After all the manipulations go to the tray, the menu of compounds, choose our connection and Hurray! Hooray !, there is a connection, there is an Internet

That's all, there are no comments on the work of the modem, I drove it for at least 30 minutes on each operator of the big three.
