In connection with the
emergence of problems with the delegation of geographic domains, I would like to say a few words about a reasonable approach to choosing a domain zone in which it makes sense to register a domain for your website.
The material does not contain revelations, is focused on novice webmasters and organizes information about popular domain zones.

What you should think about when registering a domain
If you start a more or less serious, responsible project and choose a domain for it, the first thing you should think about:
who will this domain belong to ?
The question of ownership of a domain makes sense only for those zones for the registration of domains in which money is taken from you. All free domains disappear immediately, because:
- They, as a rule, do not belong to anyone, including you;
- You can not control their performance (including the extension or transfer from hosting to hosting);
- If the domain is not functional, you will not be able to make any claims to anyone: firstly, this is explicitly stated in the regulations for the use of domains in any free zone, and secondly, what complaints can we talk about if you did not pay anyone?
Thus, it is
strongly recommended not to base serious, responsible Internet projects on domains:
- GENERIC (.ORG.RU, .PP.RU, .AC.RU, .EDU.RU, .INT.RU, provided by RosNIIROS );
- GEOGRAPHICAL (.SPB.RU, .MSK.RU, etc., provided by Relcom. DS LLC );
- Others (.narod.ru, .ucoz.ru, etc., provided by various free hosting services).
In the paid zones, too, not everything is simple. It is important to know
who and how regulates your domain ownership . In particular, the organization
ICANN , which administers such common and popular domain zones as
.COM ,
.NET ,
.ORG ,
.BIZ ,
.INFO (the so-called
gTLD ), is outside the jurisdiction of the legal field of the Russian Federation, and knows nothing about Russian legal entities. You will not be able to register a
.COM domain and have a guarantee that it is owned by your company or government agency that you represent. And
.EU domains, for example, can only be registered for an EU citizen at all, while actively being offered for registration for Russian citizens - to front companies that are EU residents. It is clear that there is no confidence in the ownership of the domain, and there can not be.
The situation is similar with the national domains of other states (called
ccTLDs ) -
.US ,
.TV ,
.WS , etc., which are administered by an organization called
IANA .
In addition, there are cases when the gTLD and ccTLD domains were categorized without any complaints according to the received complaint (abuse), and considerable nerve resources were required for the restoration of efficiency.
It’s still a bit early to think about a
. domain: Runet is not technically ready to use such domains, and it’s not yet clear when it will be ready.
But among the national domains
domains .RU and .SU are favorably distinguished.
The focal point of the national domain to which IANA was entrusted with the administration of the
.RU zone, in its regulations, clearly describes all the legal and technical aspects of the possession, disposal and use of
.RU domains. For the
.SU domain, the same degree of clarity is introduced by the documents of
the Internet Development Fund .
After changing the administration regulations made by the Coordination Center on 15.08.2009. and having abolished the minimum cost of registering a
.RU domain for the final client,
.RU domains were offered for registration at absolutely affordable prices, if not for free (with the purchase of hosting). While
.SU domains are still expensive, and there is no tendency to reduce their prices.
The last factor to keep in mind when choosing the zone of your future domain is the
“attitude” of search engines to it in the process of website promotion . I will not reveal America to you by telling the fact: if your project will be promoted in Russia and for the Russian audience, do not hesitate to register the
.RU domain.

"Parade" domain zones in descending order of comfort of their use:
