Project "Encyclopedia of Life"
Reuters informs about the opening of the new Internet project Encyclopedia of Life (Encyclopedia of Life). The creators plan to place on a single website in the public domain all available information about 1.8 million terrestrial species.
The encyclopedia will contain descriptions and images of the species, diagrams, video and audio materials, descriptions for non-professionals, links to scientific works. By analogy with the popular project Wikipedia "Encyclopedia of Life" will allow free editing of materials by visitors.
The site was solemnly presented in Washington on May 8, among the project participants - Harvard University and the Smithsonian Institution, as well as some other organizations.

It is assumed that adding all available information to the database will take about 10 years. To date, about a quarter ($ 12.5 million) of funds required for the project have been found.
