AlterGeo (also known as Wi2Geo) has launched the AlterGeo augmented reality application for iPhone (
link for iTunes ). With it, users get information about the location of friends and places, looking through the camera of your phone.
An entirely new kind of map has become available to iPhone users, which makes it possible to master the space of a megacity easier, faster, and more technologically. Looking through the camera of their mobile device, they can now see pop-up information messages about places and friends superimposed on the real image of the surroundings: for example, a cafe is located 500 meters away, an ATM is in 710, and through 843 is tire fitting. The same pop-up messages in the corresponding direction will tell you which of the friends registered with AlterGeo is nearby and at what distance. The application for the iPhone 3G S uses a compass built into the mobile device, for other iPhone models there is a manual compass line that the user scrolls.

With the new application, the surrounding reality is complemented by information from the AlterGeo database, a social service that allows you to locate users and show on the map interesting places nearby: cafes, restaurants, cinemas, shops, car washes, garages, and many others.
“AlterGeo users will be able to meet and communicate with those with whom they go to the same places,” says Wi2Geo co-founder Denis Alaev. - For this, there is an opportunity to “check in” at a specific place. You can report that you are in this club, only friends, and you can - all without restriction to users. It also allows you to find out the opinions of other users about a particular institution, to get a real, “live” recommendation. For example, I see that a person constantly goes to a restaurant in which I am now for the first time, you can write a message to him and find out that the cook does the best. ”
AlterGeo application was the first in Russia augmented reality application. Augmented reality is the translation into Russian of the generally accepted name of a new trend in the high-tech world - augmented reality (abbreviated as AR), when reality is complemented by information from the Internet or other databases. One of the most famous examples of augmented reality is a graphic image of the trajectories of the ball or puck during the broadcast of various sports games.
Thanks to AlterGeo’s alternative geography, it was surprisingly easy to explore new areas of the megalopolis, look for the right places nearby, find out which friends are nearby, and just look at the world through the camera of your iPhone.
More details about the application can be found on the
AlterGeo website.
The application itself can be downloaded via
