Russia can save MySQL

Today I received a rather large letter from campaign supporters helpmysql.org . In my opinion, rather curious. I decided to share it, well, ask to participate in this campaign.

Ps. There are a lot of links in the letter, I will leave some (in my opinion important) clickable, the others will not - so that they would not be suspected of spam =)

Dear supporters of the helpmysql.org campaign, everyone who is not indifferent to the fate of MySQL.
')
The European Union may not be able to protect MySQL from Oracle, but your country is one of two strong, independent countries that can still make a difference (the second country is China). I personally appeal to you for help. You have already helped by signing the petition at http://www.helpmysql.org/ru/petition , but now you can do even more.

1) The Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) of Russia invited interested parties to provide information about this transaction. This is stated in the official statement: http://www.fas.gov.ru/merger/notifications/a_28550.shtml .

If you or your friends are using MySQL for commercial purposes, then your information could be very useful FAS.

We will not tell you in detail what exactly to write in FAS, but in general terms you could describe how you use MySQL (in which projects, with what data volumes, number of users, etc.) and then express your opinion about what happens if Oracle gets permission to buy MySQL. You can also describe cases in which MySQL was considered as a free alternative to expensive Oracle products, examples of how Oracle lowered prices or offered big discounts because the company used or intended to use MySQL are especially important.

You can send your letter to:
Federal Antimonopoly Service
Sadovaya Kudrinskaya,
11 Moscow, D-242, GSP-5, 123995

phone: + 7-499-7957653

Do not forget to indicate the application number:
in FAS of Russia number 33986 of 04.08.2009.

When turning to FAS, consider it as an organization that can help you protect your interests and try to make this task as easy as possible.

2) Thanks to you and your support, our petition already costs almost
900 signatures from Russia: http://www.helpmysql.org/ru/stats (2.7% of the total number of signatures - approx. Absolvo )

This is a good start, but Russia is a large country that supports open source software, and there may be many more signatures. The problem was that many thought it was a decision of the European Union, and that Russia's position could not influence anything. Now, after the official announcement of the FAS, it is high time for Russia to take a more active position.

We are not yet very famous in Russia. Mostly learn about us from this interview: http://habrahabr.ru/blogs/habrainterview/80534/

You can help by telling about leading Russian computer sites and magazines, such as www.compress.ru , www.computerra.ru , www.pcworld.ru , www.computerbild.ru , www.chip.eu/ru

Or you can discuss the current situation on popular forums, for example at sql.ru/forum/actualforum.aspx , www.developers.org.ua , rsdn.ru

The more Russian websites are up to date, the more people will want to help MySQL and will sign the petition. Please make sure that these articles at least mention helpmysql.org. It is even better if they provide a full link to the Russian version of the site: http://www.helpmysql.org/ru .

I am sincerely grateful for any help.

Respectfully,
Michael Widenius,
MySQL creator
