VoIP and IM in Nokia N900

The Nokia N900 is a geeky smartphone both in essence and positioning. Outside of IT-tusky, few have heard of him. I will not say for the rest of the country, but in the Russian representative office the company did not spend on its traditional promotion - outdoor advertising, TV-commercials, etc. - not a penny. Moreover, the company is in principle not interested in significant sales of the N900 - it is important that the device turns out to be only who needs it. The following models will be more massive, but for now the manufacturer needs to expand the community and finally bring the “smartphone” Maemo to the mind.

The small circulation of the N900 allowed Nokia to run one very curious thing on it - the deep integration of VoIP and IM services into the device software. In my opinion, this is perhaps the most interesting thing in this device for the average advanced user (developers and hell Linux users - do not count).

First, a few words why VoIP at the “low” level is impossible in another, more popular, Nokia device (and, in principle, of any major smartphone maker). Vendors - maybe they were glad. But such a phone will not be taken to sell, no operator - they really do not like VoIP, especially popular, like Skype or Google Talk. And if only it does not “take it” - the operator can still be offended. And since the operators sell their phones in their networks, how many, the manufacturers are completely at odds with them. If the user really wants to - let him install the application and use any VoIP for health. But to pre-install something is sedition. (Yes, in Nokia smartphones on S60 SIP is supported from time immemorial - but you try to dig it out first, and then try to set it up). Some people go even further: Microsoft, for example, does not fundamentally place any VoIP software in the Windows Marketplace mobile app store.

From the point of view of the operators, the Nokia N900 is worse than the “two-part” phone. The out-of-the-box N900 supports Skype, Gtalk, SIP, Ovi chat, Jabber (the set can be expanded — more on this below) —but these services are not implemented as separate applications that need to be launched from the menu, but as standard system components that loaded when the device starts and always ready to work, along with traditional voice services and messaging services. Moreover:

1. All VoIP and IM accounts are created and edited in one “Settings” section.

2. A single center of activity and statuses is provided for all services. You can enter a status message and enable the display of coordinates (accurate to the city, district or street). N900 keeps connection to all accounts simultaneously.

3. During dialing, you can select the type of call: cellular or VoIP.

4. When connecting to a service (for example, Skype), the N900 downloads a list of contacts (along with avatars) and displays it in the main notebook. Next to the contact is displayed his status ("online", "offline", not available). Contacts from different services can be filtered in the “Groups” tab. Accounts (UIN, ID, etc.) user in all services can be added to his main contact - so that there is no hash. (I, truth, did not check yet, whether sucks these fields at synchronization of contacts sucks).

5. All IM chats are displayed and saved in the general list of messages along with SMS.

6. The standard set of services can be expanded using plugins. I installed the Pidgin protocols plugin for Conversations and Contacts (AIM, GaduGadu, ICQ, MSN, QQ, Sametime and Yahoo) and the Twitter plugin for Conversations and Contacts (you can’t write normal tweets with it - you can only reply. But it loads the list of followers and all replai).

7. When you activate your Ovi chat account, your smartphone also launches the Ovi Share content sharing service. By the way, very convenient.

Of course, with the N900 you can not only make calls via VoIP, but also receive calls.

Unfortunately, you cannot activate multiple accounts of the same service at the same time (for example, two SIP accounts) on the N900. In addition, the smartphone does not support video chats in any of the services. Well, and the battery it all eats - mother do not grieve.
