Twenty largest DNS servers

The United States has long dominated the hosting industry. This is confirmed by the location in the US of 16 of the 20 largest DNS servers in the world. The remaining 4 major DNS servers are located in Germany and China. Together, these DNS servers serve 32% of the world's domain names (top-level domains .com, .net, .org, .biz, and .info are counted).

One of the reasons for the US domination is that the Internet infrastructure in the US had more time to develop than in other countries. Another less obvious reason is that the hosting industry in the United States had more time to join and because of this it has larger players in this market. In addition, the services of American hosting companies are available to non-US companies and individuals.

Interestingly, some DNS servers from this list belong to companies that do not host or register domains, but do domain speculation, that is, sell or buy domain names like real estate. Sedo is the most famous example of such an activity.
