The correct use of abbreviations

The golden rule: the gender and number of abbreviations are determined by the reference word in its decoding. For example, the USA - they (the United States of America), the USSR - it (the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics), the media - they (the media), the CIS - it (the Commonwealth of Independent States).

Nevertheless, the Internet is full of mysterious mistakes: “The USA has declared ”, “The CIS has collapsed ” or “the media has published ”. I suppose they can be admitted by those who do not know the decryption of these abbreviations, as well as during a quick edit without reading the text: replacing synonyms (newspaper - media) or abbreviation of phrases (US Department of Defense stated - USA stated).

The overwhelming majority of people believe that the word NATO is neuter: “ NATO has applied ,” “NATO has responded,” “NATO has declared,” less commonly, masculine (“ NATO has applied ”). In fact, NATO is the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The masculine and the genus can only appear in the option "NATO Alliance has increased" or "NATO has reduced the bloc," and the average - "NATO leadership said." The traffic police, by the way, is also feminine - although in colloquial speech hardly anyone would say that.

Exceptions

Some abbreviations have been living in our language for so long that they abstracted themselves a little from their decoding and began an independent life. So, the Moscow Art Theater began to decline (“the head of the Moscow Art Theater”), the Foreign Ministry began to decline and became masculine (“the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted”), and the university had lost capitalization to everything (“in all universities of the country”). This also includes "pillbox", "registry office" and other common abbreviations: it suffices to recall the phrase "TASS is authorized to declare."

PS

According to a somewhat dubious source , the longest abbreviation in Russian is NIIOMTPLABOPARMBETZHELBETRABSBORMONIMONKONTODTEHSTROMONT. In her 55 letters and she ... feminine. It is deciphered as follows: "Research laboratory of operations for the reinforcement of concrete and reinforced concrete work on the construction of prefabricated monolithic and monolithic structures of the technology department of the construction and assembly department of the Academy of Construction and Architecture of the USSR."
