The Pentagon warns: geeks getting smaller

Fewer American teens have a desire to become computer geeks. This trend creates a real threat to the security of the country, warns the US Department of Defense.

According to experts, “America’s ability to compete in the international arena can be undermined without college graduates who can understand and improve advanced technologies over the coming decades ... Finding the right people with increasingly specialized talents becomes more complex and increases the risk for the wide range of systems used in Ministry of Defense, including software. ”

To promote computer science, mathematics and engineering among young people, the military does not spare funds. There is a special program STEM at the scientific and military agency DARPA, but the results are still deplorable. In 2003-2006, the number of applicants for these technical specialties decreased by 43%. How to change the situation, the authorities do not yet know and are ready to support any private initiatives in this area. Summer computer camps for children and special courses in schools on weekends are offered as examples for funding.
