Wikipedia recently published internal statistics on which language versions of Wikipedia are popular in which countries. In particular, interesting pages:
Of course, you need to take into account the error in determining the country by ip-address, especially for countries whose traffic share is less than 0.001%, but still you can find interesting facts in statistics.
1.6% of all requests come from Russia to Wikipedia servers.
The Russian section attracts 2.1% of all requests.
70% of requests from Ukraine go to the Russian-language section (the next most popular is English 13% and only then Ukrainian).
In Norway, the English section is more popular than the Norwegian.
From Sierra Leone, the Russian section of Wikipedia is addressed more often than English (embassy staff is a statistical error?).
The Spanish section most requests from Mexico, not from Spain.
It was also interesting to see in which countries the positions of national language sections are strong, and in which not so much. I have compiled a separate table about the popularity of the English language section of Wikipedia among Internet users from different countries. Data is given as a percentage of the total number of hits to different language versions of Wikipedia. Apparently, you can talk about how well the Internet users from one country or another speak English (prefer information on it) or how well developed sections of Wikipedia are in national languages (the better the “local” language section is developed, the less reason to turn to English) .
I selected only those countries for which the share in the total Wikipedia traffic is more than 0.05%. Large countries (traffic more than 1%) are highlighted.
