Canonical and Intel announced a joint project of Ubuntu Mobile and Embedded Edition

The project is based on Ubuntu, whose open source software and technology will be able to help everyone achieve their capabilities. The main goal is to create a world-class free and open source operating system available in parallel on laptops, desktops, client terminals and servers.

In three years, it has become clear that new types of devices — small, portable, graphical “tablets” with Internet support — are changing the way we communicate and collaborate. These devices create demand for open-source software and need new graphical interfaces, improved power and better responsiveness.

Intel has announced a new low-power processor and chipset architecture that will allow full use of the Internet.

To accomplish their goals and in response to the technical problems that confront these devices, Canonical and Intel created the Ubuntu Mobile and Embedded project. Details of the new project will be announced at the Ubuntu Developer Summit, which will be held next week in Seville, and the first release will have to appear along with Ubuntu 7.10 - in October 2007.
