Login form experiment: OpenID, two in one, or regular powder?

Hello, .

Recently, when we launched the Filmbase , we, in addition to ways to counteract habraeefekt, asked another question that had long interested us: what form of login is most convenient for most users. To do this, we conducted an experiment: until today, all site visitors were offered randomly one of the 4 login options, each of which consisted of 2 forms. We carried out the assessment very simply: by the number of people who still registered through each of the options for the forms. Since the options were offered randomly, the more people registered - the more convenient the form (or the smaller number of people she scared away :).

So, the participants in the experiment and its results:

Participant 1. "The usual form"

Everything is simple here: it is proposed to enter an e-mail and password for a login, if they are not there, go to the registration form (without reloading the page), where we can enter the same e-mail and password + repeat password.

The only advantage that we have seen in this form is familiarity for the “ordinary user”.

Participant 2. “Two in one”

This form is more unusual, but without following links.

If you already have an account, you simply enter the e-mail and password, if not, click on the radio button “I have not registered yet”, after which you can either enter the password or use its automatic generation.

The advantage of this form is that you don’t need to switch to another page (which users don’t like) and the ability not to enter a password during registration. Minus - unfamiliar for most of the form - may scare.

Participant 3. "OpenID"

Advantages of logging in with OpenID on Habré have already been considered many times, so I will not repeat. Cons of the form - so far not all users have OpenID, and those who have, do not know about it, explanatory labels do not read or do not understand what they read.

Experiment and Results

The experiment took place as follows: for each visitor, when entering the site, a random number from 1 to 4 was selected and recorded in the session. This visitor was displayed one of 4 options login form. Each option consisted of 2 forms: one for logon by e-mail and a logon form for OpenID.

Below is a plate with a description of the options and the number of users who registered for each option with a split into registrations by OpenID and by e-mail.

Before drawing conclusions, I will give one more sign - the same, but among the anti-users of Habrahabr, namely those people who came to our site through search engines before the announcement of the site on Habr. Why "anti" - because the vast majority of Habr's visitors have already decided on the places where they search and download movies, and are unlikely to get to our site through a search engine. There were fewer such users, because the site was not promoted by search engines, and indeed it was in the alpha version, but the statistics will be useful for comparison. So, the same data, but for the period until December 30, 2009.

Some additional data:

findings

In principle, from this data, everyone can draw conclusions for himself.

We left the form number 3 on the site, because it seems to be most liked by users.

The slight difference in the total number of registrations for different options can be explained by the fact that people were registered, mainly when there was a desire to subscribe to the film, i.e. when they saw the login form, they already wanted to register. Otherwise, the distribution of "everything" might look different.

As the experiment showed, the form of “two in one” is no worse than the “usual” form, users like it even more (or just understand, go find out).

OpenID is used actively. If you are going to write about your project in Habré - connect OpenID necessarily, because the vast majority of visitors from here entering the site through OpenID. Ordinary users, as you can see, also use it quite successfully. I thought that there would be less.
