Video Playback on MacOS - Movist

image After migrating to a Mac, one of the issues that caused some trouble was choosing a player to play video content, including HD. If on Windows the choice is big enough (although in most cases I used GOM Player or Media Player Classic + K-Lite Codec Pack). So on a Mac, the case was limited to these programs:

You probably shouldn't dwell on them in detail, you already know them all. I will write only small remarks that I did not like for one reason or another.

Quite by chance I stumbled upon a Movist player on a blog I immediately liked: its small size, fast, native interface is very similar to QT, it loses everything it can, despite the latest build 0.6.7, is very stable.

In full-screen mode, it is very similar to Makovsky FrontRow, using content from iTunes and the Movies folder.

There are not so many settings compared to VLC, but they are all clear and there are plenty of them. Excellent subtitle support, Russian interface, Apple Remote support. In general, all that the best representatives of this genre have and have Movist.

Looking through the site osx.iusethis.com there are not so many player users compared to VLC (at the time of publication 342 versus 18612 ), but I think the player will pick up its users very quickly, it’s very good :)

Finally, the news about the fate of VLC for Mac.

Team VideoLAN, which is developing a popular cross-platform media player with open source VLC, announced that the development of a Mac version of the product may be suspended in the near future. The reason is simple: the lack of volunteer developers with the right level of skills and knowledge of the target platform.

The most problematic area of development for the Mac version of VLC is the user interface. According to the developers, the cross-platform product core written in C, as well as most of the plug-ins work quite well, which is not the case with the graphical interface for Mac OS X, which, when written in Objective-C, takes up only 1% of the entire VLC code . This is precisely the reason why the developers explain a number of problems in the operation of the versions VLC 1.0.x for Mac OS X, as well as the termination of support for 64-bit mode in version 1.0.3.

At the same time, developers recognize that VLC has always been insufficiently integrated with Mac OS X, which led them to start working on an alternative shell for the VLC core, called the Lunettes.

Nevertheless, this product is at an early stage of development and the first preliminary version will appear only in January. Quite unexpectedly, the VLC team complained about the unfriendly attitude to their products from Apple, which allegedly blocks their development in every possible way.
