ROC calls to fight anonymity on the Internet

The Moscow Patriarchate expressed concern about the danger of the spread of extremist ideas on the Internet.

The clergy explain their position by saying that in the network “people usually hide behind their nicknames, full of dirt, mutual insults and extremist statements”. This, in particular, was declared by the head of the Synodal Department for Relations between the Russian Orthodox Church and Society, Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin (pictured) at a meeting of the Russian Victory Organizing Committee.

The priest supported the proposal made by the vice-governor of St. Petersburg Alla Manilova during the meeting to exclude anonymity in the largest social Internet networks. He called for the fact that “at least at the level of honor codes of self-respecting people, and maybe at the level of administration, anonymity on the Internet is excluded”.

Vsevolod Chaplin also supported the proposal formulated in preparation for the meeting to create a cycle of television and radio programs on the spiritual and moral education of young people, stressing that "the lack of demand for such programs is a myth."

The priest cited sociological data, voiced, he said, on the eve of one of the TV channels, according to which about a third of the population of Russia prefers to watch documentaries and educational programs, and about 90% believe that "today there are programs on TV that cannot be shown."

In addition, the representative of the Moscow Patriarchate welcomed the initiatives of the Ministry of Justice on the examination of the literature for the presence of signs of extremism and the development of draft laws regulating the activities of missionaries and religious groups that are not legal entities.

“People who propagandize extremist ideas should be aware of the inevitability of the deterrent force of law and punishment,” said the priest.

However, in his opinion, to overcome extremism, not only restrictive measures are needed, but also the support of "well-meaning youth organizations," including those associated with religious associations.

The main topic of the meeting of the Victory organizing committee was the question of the activities of state authorities and civil society institutions in the prevention of political and religious extremism in the activities of youth public organizations.

The meeting, chaired by First Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov, was also attended by Justice Minister Alexander Konovalov, Sport Minister Vitaly Mutko, First Deputy Mayor of Moscow in the Moscow government Lyudmila Shvetsova, Presidential Envoy in federal districts, Head of the Russian Muftis Board, Sheikh Ravil Gainutdin, Chief Rabbi of Russia (FEOR) Berl Lazar.
