Prehistory
I toyota corolla 2003, from the factory on the official machine put only cassette recorder. Of course, I never put the cassettes in the radio tape recorder once, I got along with the radio and FM modulator.
Not to say that I am particularly pretentious to music, but of course I wanted something more. What were the options:
1. Put the frame on 1 or 2 Din and put the usual radio.
2. Buy for $ 70 native, on eBay but already with the disks. But without mp3 :)
3. Buy for $ 600 cool, right under my car, with everything ...
But I didn’t particularly like one ...
1. conventional radio tape recorder deprived of the onboard computer.
2. Shilo on soap :)
3. A little expensive and not really liked ...
')
So it was decided to put the computer in the car. That's what it was before and after. Interesting? Welcome under habrakat =)
Before:

After:

Main part
Immediately, of course, I did not rush to do everything, but for a long time I collected everything I needed :)
It turned out that 60% I already had or easily got from friends and relatives.
I will describe the complete set a bit - Of course, it all started with the motherboard:

This is PCM-9386. The main advantage is passive cooling, and a very small size. But the processor is only 600 MHz. Memory 512 mb.
Price: all trophy, already before the start of the project.
As a carrier of information, there is a CF flash drive 4 Gig, there is a system on it, and a 40 Gig 2.5 hard drive.
Price: everything was there too.
Nutrition.
A small power supply from 12v. In the car, it is not necessary, not any converters for 220V maximum voltage of 12V.

Price: about 20 - $ 30 (I got for free) :)
Sound
Of course, you can not connect the car speakers directly to your computer, I had to invent a sound scheme:
USB sound + power filter MORE audio filter (earth insulator :) NEXT Amplifier NEXT speakers.
There was no task to make a super sound, as I said before, I traveled with a fm modulator :) and the speakers remained native.
USB Sound 5.1

Price: $ 16 on eBay
The scarf really gives 5.1, but the car uses only stereo. The fee was taken for growth and hopefully get rid of interference. By the way, interference is a separate topic - you don’t even think about it before installing it, but when you test it on, you understand that it is tin, you hear everything: how the hard drive is turned on and the engine is running, the engine speed is a generator.
I played with different filters for a long time, only this one got rid of interference:

Price: $ 8 all the same :)
Regarding this filter, or rather similar ones to it, there are many discussions on the Internet that it distorts the sound, but I did not notice any special distortion.
Amplifier:

Chinese miracle on 4 channels, and supposedly huge power. Instead of the head unit plays well, in my opinion ...
Price: $ 26 ebay
I bought a frame for 2 din.

Price: $ 15
The most expensive part is the monitor:

Price: $ 320
This is a monitor for the lazy. It is exactly under 2 din, with a precision screen, 2 am inputs, automatic switching on (no need to turn on each time), and automatic switching to the rear camera.
Also was purchased yusb hub with external power.

Price: $ 19
And a wireless keyboard with a trackball.
I did not find photos.
Price: $ 40 like ...
USB GPS - already there, hid under a torpedo, accepts normally.
USB to OBD2 - bought for $ 10 half a year ago, reads the sensor readings in real time and error codes.

Installation process

Working system

We put Windu on a computer (the cat is not included in the package of delivery =)

View from above on the motherboard (see CF memory card)

Put the driver on something ... =)

Conclusion
That's all. Still all sorts of buttons, wires, fuses, and other small things ...
I made the case for the motherboard from the case from the 16th port switch (iron box). The case is located directly behind the monitor.
The amplifier is located in the glove compartment between the seats. To do this, it had to be slightly reduced ...
I put the shell for easy management from the touchscreen.
What are the main functions implemented:
- Multimedia - music, videos, movies ...
- GPS - worth iGo 8
- OBD - tracking vehicle parameters.
- Internet - you can follow where the car is on Google maps, both from the car and from home.
Which will be implemented:
- Rear view camera (everything is ready to be installed, but I broke the camera)
- Video registration
- Observation of tire pressure - while the devices under the camp are expensive ~ $ 250, we'll wait a bit.
- Radio, yes, there is no radio yet :) I bought FM radio, but it takes poorly.

UPD: added some pics :)UPD2: The author of the idea - ivbar was invited to Habr, thanks to Habrayuzer danin !
