New Ion Wexler. Autopsy

After reviewing the Wexler VisION nettop and a few hours of playing in Left 4 Dead 2, I went directly to opening the device.

image

It should also be recalled that the developer of the platform is Foxconn, which develops and manufactures a huge number of computer components and reference platforms. In my subjective opinion, Foxconn engineers were better at making a nettop than their Pegatron colleagues who developed VisION-1.

For opening it is enough to unscrew the 4 screws that fix the two halves of the case to each other. After that, it is necessary to pry off 10 plastic latches with some sharp and flat object - a clerical knife or a thin screwdriver.

image

After opening, the first thing we see is the motherboard, in the center of which the hard disk is majestically located. And he settled unceremoniously immediately over the PCB, laying a rubber lining under him. Next to it is a cooler, a cooling processor and a chipset.

RAM is represented by a SO-DIMM bar on Kingston's 2Gb PC6400. This essentially distinguishes the nettop from its predecessor, which had a bundle of soldered memory on 1Gb and a strip on another 1Gb. There is also a rubber gasket under the memory bar to protect the motherboard from damage when replacing the memory.

Samsung 250Gb 5400rpm standard hard drive with 8mb cache. As it seems to me, when choosing a hard drive, the manufacturer focused on the minimum level of noise and heating, which are famous for Samsung drives.

In this picture you can see the substrate on which lay the hard drive. The underside of the substrate is adhesive, so you need to remove it very, very carefully. Under the substrate to find a number of chips.

The GL826 chip is manufactured by GENESYS LOGIC and is responsible for the operation of the USB card reader built into the case.

ITE IT8512E - according to the materials IR receiver. After detecting this chip, I frantically began to turn the device in search of an infrared sensor, but found nothing. Maybe I was looking bad ...
It is believed that this is a multifunctional microcontroller , and it is more like the truth.

image

Realtek ALC888 - is responsible for eight-channel sound. I do not know how it is with the eight-channel, but the speaker built into the case plays great stereo. At least I have perfectly tested the movie, listening to the small hole in the body.

image

Now we know what this motherboard form factor is called. This is JTX.

image

Surprisingly, there is also a layout for integrated memory, where there is actually no memory. Apparently this hurt for some other markets.

At this point there could be a secret microphone that would overhear you, but it isn’t. I also like Hole31 type names.

The built-in Wi-Fi adapter connects to the board via a standard mini pci-e connector for such devices. The WiMAX module will also fit perfectly if it is found on the free market.

image

Go to the back of the board. This is where the interesting things lie.

image

On the reverse side is the description of the board with the manufacturer's marking, as well as a pair of non-soldered mini pci-e connectors. Thus, people with the right hand driver will be able to unsolder both the WiMax module and a small system SSD, if it is supported in the current BIOS, of course.

Here you can also unsolder several RAM chips.
Where I can solder an additional eSATA port - I never found it.

But in general, that's all.

Successes ... and to new meetings.
