“It won't work, because Rambler has bad karma”

On December 31, 2009, the only public Russian Internet company will delist from the London Stock Exchange. Since the IPO cost Rambler has decreased by half, the company has recently changed its leadership three times. Once the most popular search site Runet now controls only 3.7% of the search market.

This year Rambler left almost all of the top management headed by CEO Mark Opzumer. Olga Turischeva, the company's next CEO, tells about the withdrawal of Rambler from the crisis in an interview with the Vedomosti newspaper, who left the post of marketing director for VimpelCom for this job.

“When I came here, I immediately realized that the task would be difficult and in order to return the leadership, the company needed a complete structural restructuring. The first thing I encountered was that people here did not believe that the situation could be changed. Everyone said: “It will not work, because Rambler has bad karma” ”.

You can really believe in bad karma, especially after the breakdown of a deal with Google a year ago. They say it was done due to the fact that the Russian authorities decided to consider Yandex as a strategic value .

When the state protects your competitors - in such an atmosphere it is really difficult to work.

“The decadent mood was one of Rambler’s deep structural problems, and I honestly did not suspect that I would have to face the problem of employee motivation to such an extent. Now the atmosphere is changing, karma is clearly getting better. ”

Olga Turishcheva admits that it was not easy to survive the flight of the previous management team: “After the departure of a number of key people of the old team, the first line of top managers was practically absent in the Rambler all summer: there was no financial, commercial director, product director, etc.

The general director of Rambler declined to comment on rumors that the runner’s contextual advertising system is in talks with Google about the monetization of its Russian traffic: “I can say that Google’s market share in the Russian-language search is about 35%, and last year’s market advertising contextual more than 10%, so he has room to grow, ”said Olga to this question.
