Scientists have created the world's smallest snowman
By the impending holidays, scientists have created the world's smallest snowman. This miracle was built in the British National Physical Laboratory. The head and torso of a snowman is made from a pair of tin beads, commonly used to calibrate the astigmatism of an electron microscope. Platinum precipitation was used for their adhesions. Eyes and mouth, as the creators of the figures explain in the laboratory’s press release, were cut out with a focused ion beam. The nose (its diameter is less than 0.001 mm) is the “handful” of platinum atoms landed on the surface of tin with the help of an ion beam. The assembly was carried out using a nano-manipulator, and the snowman was placed on the console of an atomic force microscope capable of measuring the topography of objects at almost an atomic level.
