Programming passion

Recently read a book by Chad Fowler (Chad Fowler) Passion for Programming (The Passionate Programmer). I must say that I really liked her and even lit me. In my opinion, this opus does not quite match its name (which, by the way, has already changed) and the book is unlikely to give anyone a real passion for such an interesting lesson as programming. However, following her advice, it is possible to build a spectacular career in your favorite business. The author points to typical mistakes and shows how to avoid them. At the end of each of the sections (and there are 53 of them) there is the item “Act!” With a description of what you can try and apply right here and now.
I liked the book so much that I decided to start translating it. The original can be downloaded here . This pleasure costs only $ 15. On average, I will try to keep up the pace - one section per week, eventually reaching 2-3 sections. And today - the first chapter.

Chapter 1

opening speech

I am sure that in each of us there is something outstanding, but it takes a long time to understand what is really important, to draw it out of ourselves. You can not be outstanding if you do not love your surroundings, tools and your area.
Before I started the project 37signals and Ruby on Rails, I went through a series of works and projects that did not fit the name “outstanding” at all. I traded water, and the days looked like two drops of each other. Before I realized this, 6 months passed and they gave absolutely nothing to me. The feeling of bitterness was disgusting. I just hate the feeling that my existence has absolutely no meaning and the world will not change a jot if I do not do my job. To become outstanding, you must realize that you leave a significant mark on the Universe.
And when I didn’t do this, it also flowed into my personal life. When I didn’t feel my courage while working in the office, then it became harder and harder to make an attempt and begin to act.
For me, conducting an outstanding career is the best of those ways that I know for the beginning of an outstanding life — one in which you will not just become a better and more sought-after employee, but also become a better person.
That is why this book is so important. It is not just about how to make better widgets and feel safer at work. It is more about how to develop the skills and feelings in order for life to be gracious and filled with outstanding components, of which work is only one of them.
- David Hanson (David Heinemeier Hansson)
Creator of Ruby on Rails and partner of the 37signals project.
