Microsoft lost the case for Office

The case of the legality of the use of some XML-technologies in Office, in which two parties participated: Microsoft and i4i were lost by Microsoft. Now, Microsoft is obliged to stop selling products from the Office suite, which contain code that is subject to i4i patents.

Microsoft has time until January 11th. As stated in the official statement, these measures apply only to the United States and do not apply to products that have already been sold. Apparently, a fine will be paid for those sold (there is information about $ 200 million). In addition, Microsoft states that it was already preparing for a similar court decision and by January 11, 2010, it will start delivering Office 2007 in the USA without a questionable code. Thus, Microsoft partners and clients will not feel this decision of the court. Office 2010 Beta available for testing ALREADY does not contain this code and does not fall under the patent attack.
