Photo on 26 gigapixels

A new record for the size of a photograph taken with the help of DSLR was set by Holger Schulze, a 44-year-old amateur photographer from Germany. 1655 photos of 21.6 MP each in the amount of 26,031,250,000 points, that is, 26 gigapixels.

The total image size is 297.500 x 87.500 pixels. The resolution is so great that in the hotel window (a white building just to the left of the center) a person’s face is clearly visible.

Panorama of Dresden on a sunny day was shot from a motorized tripod at a height of 35 meters with a Canon 5D Mark II camera for 176 minutes. For the subsequent gluing of the web, we had to use a 16-processor system with 48 GB of RAM. Careful image processing, adjusting the points for gluing, leveling the adjacent fragments required five weeks of hard manual work. The final rendering of the picture took 94 hours. The result of the work (in the interactive version) can be found here .
