A social network with opportunities to find “friends” by any signs, exchange messages, pictures, videos, etc., can be called a system thing, i.e. The basic idea of this type of human communication.
To produce projects containing only the basic idea is fashionable, but as a result is not effective, because there is no reason for people to register everywhere and re-find friends already found elsewhere. Even if this happens, the user eventually leans towards some kind of one network, reducing its activity in others. As a result, we have a number of large recognized projects.
We will not take into account the "everyday" attributes of the search, such as a university, school, place of work, etc. Let's look at the search and unite people based on mutual interests - professional, household, and whatever. If there are programmers, there are culinary specialists, there are collectors of rubber ducks, there are music lovers - whoever is not.
What will a person do if driven by interest or passion - will he go to a small thematic project or join the thematic group of a large project?

Is it enough for people to find a new / old friend in the social network, knowing his interests? Do these people have enough of the basic capabilities of any social network to communicate?
From the point of view of maintaining one contact list of friends, a large number of new potential friends, etc. one large project is more convenient for use. But there is a lack of functionality, taking into account the specifics of interests. Brand collectors will be interested in their catalog for images, advanced options for images, a small exchanger or a flea market. Programmers - a library of code with the correct display, etc. And if a programmer and a collector are one and the same person and his friends too, then, finding the missing functionality in different projects, users “break”.
I will note that this is not about deeply professional hobbies, but about amateur interests of “moderate gravity”.
Thus, it is possible to develop thematic groups of social networks at the expense of applications. Only FB applications are cloud only, but in most cases they cannot be called oriented to meet all the needs of a group of users with one common interest.
There is reason to believe that this approach will cause more interest from users than the emergence of new medium-sized projects.
When designing a new startup, in my opinion, it is worth thinking about an alternative way to implement it, which, however, may not exclude the existence of a core project with a serious study of thematic functionality.
